Om mig When I was 16 I tasted English food and I liked it. Steak and kidney pie, fish and chips, Yorkshire pudding, Stilton cheese, this with peas and that with peas. And as I’m friends to anyone who ever gave any kind of delectable food to me I’ve been decidedly anglophile ever since.
Then there was that friendly old Glaswegian who filled my friends and me with Scotch broth on a rainy day. I’ll always remember him – and Scotland.
And Americans? Playing in the woods, my friends and me (at abecedarian age, all of us) bumped into a GI patrol one day. As we froze, staring at them in a mixture of fear and curiosity, they smiled and talked to us but we couldn’t understand a word. Finally a huge lot of fascinating bubble gums conveyed the message across the language barrier. There, in a little German forest in the 1960s, my fascination with America began.
