Lunar - I'd like to convey my admiration for your sticking to your guns in various threads. Typically, it seems that you're forced to take on two left-liberals and a socialist at the same time. I know from experience that it can be wearisome when you're outnumbered like that. I'm a fellow libertarian, by the way, though we don't agree on everything. Carry on!
It's late now, but I will check out "Healing Our World". It sounds interesting, though I'm unlikely to be convinced that there is a better health care solution than socialized health care. I don't have a problem with private insurers continuing to exist as an extra option, but medical care is one of the things that I think the government should offer every citizen. Some things should not be left to the free market. Heal care is one of them.
You know, I describe my personal politics as liberal/libertarian. Is that a contradiction in terms?

I haven't done a lot of studying of libertarian views, but I agree with them on a personal level. I think most things should be legalized. People should be allowed to harm themselves however they see fit, if that makes sense.

But I am a liberal on social issues. I do think that there should be government should provide healthcare, education, welfare for the poor, police and fire fighters, stuff like that.

I have a feeling those later views would get me booted from most libertarian meetings, no?
Hey man,

To me The Traveler isn't really a dystopia story (though it is billed that way all the time). This may not sound very flattering to the book, but it reminds me of The Matrix if it were written by the Unibomber. I know that sounds terrible, but it's the most apt description I could come up with. The heroes are people who live 'off the grid' and there is a strong theme of not trusting those in power and technology being used to erode privacy.
I've been arguing with you like mad about the FLDS people and I don't agree with you, but you're an interesting cat.

Hey, I'm reading a book right now called The Traveler by John Twelve Hawks. It's no masterpiece, but I think you might find it interesting anyway.
If you just saw part two of "John Adams" then I must assume you have HBO. If that is the case did you watch "The Wire", a sixty part, five year miniseries that was arguably the best thing ever put on TV. I don't know anyone else who has even heard of the show, much less seen it. If you've seen it, would you have any interest in a discussion group for it?
The "Sam" story was brilliant!

It would not be so funny (-or so sad) if it were not so true!
What an interesting library. i look forward to browsing it in more depth when i have time.
Thanks for your reflection on Life of Pi. I wasn't impressed with the book-- it had been HIGHLY recommended by my best friend--she couldn't put it down, but I had no trouble stopping for a few days at a time. I finally made it through and could donate it to charity.

But in the last six weeks since I finished it [Life of Pi] bits and pieces will come back to me, and haunt me. My opinion of it is improving, and now I ask people at work if they've read it.
