Guest Lecture by Josh Henkin, September 25 - Thorny Issues of Craft: What makes for more and less auspicious beginnings and endings for a piece of fiction? How much should the writer reveal? When? What is the difference between plot and plot device? What is voice and how does one achieve it? What ... (mere)is the relevance of point of view? How is dialogue similar to and different from actual speech? Is there any truth to the old adage “show, don’t tell”? We will pay particular attention to the “p-word”: plot. Many writers know how to tell a story when they are sitting with a friend over a cup of coffee, but lose that ability once they put pen to paper. We will also discuss different ways to think about narrative and how to build tension over time. (Part of fee based series - individual admission $45 in advance.
