(mere)Americans after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. In praise of Mary's book, our own Mary G. has this to say: "This book is as important, lovely and informative as it is a challenge to categorize. It unfolds the drama of the relocation order, the evacuation by ferry to Seattle and the train ride to the camps, and camp life. It is an important book for students of journalism as well as of history. It captures a defining moment in a seemingly ordinary small town, providing essential lessons in citizenship and democracy, and as such, it is important for all of us in today's political climate."

Secret Garden Books: Brunonia Barry, The Lace Reader (september 7 kl. 18:30)
All the Whitney women can read the future in a piece of lace. But Towner Whitney has vowed never to use her gift––and never to return to Salem––after a terrible tragedy involving her twin sister, Lyndley, nearly left her mad. But her resolve is tested when her beloved Great Aunt Eva, Salem’s ... (mere)original Lace Reader, disappears and Towner must return to the place that has been her family’s home for generations, the only place where she can find the truth about her aunt’s disappearance and her own disquieting past. But as one mystery is solved, another begins as a troubled and abused young woman named Angela disappears from Salem, a disappearance that could possibly be linked to a born-again preacher with deep ties to the Whitney clan and a cult-like following frighteningly reminiscent of a far earlier time. With the infamous and history-laden town of Salem, Massachusetts as a backdrop, this remarkable first-time author has created a modern community of fascinating characters whose ties to each other and the past are also inextricably bound to what a time and place have come to represent culturally as part of our national identity. The Lace Reader is a mesmerizing tale which spirals into a world of secrets as difficult to read as the lace itself. It is also an important story about the love of family, the bond between women, the mystery of twins, and the ever-present danger of the past repeating itself. The Lace Reader has been chosen as a Dual Main Selection of the Book-of-the-Month Club. The book's own website is here.

Elliott Bay Bookstore: Michael Meade (september 11 kl. 19:30)
We are delighted to present this evening with renowned storyteller, teacher, and scholar of mythology Michael Meade. From his Vashon Island home, and from Seattle-based non-profit organization Mosaic, he has long worked a rarely-worked line, that of working with the intimate and immediate (as simple ... (mere)as a room with a few people and a story), and, at the same time, with mythological or cosmological material that would seem to transcend time and place, at least in measure we are used to reckoning in the day-to-day. With his evenings of stories and workshops—often with particular groups such as at-risk youth, veterans, the incarcerated—he has long done this orally. (Mosaic has a great assortment of cd recordings.) Earlier this year saw the publication of a long-awaited second book, The World Behind the World: Living at the Ends of Time (GreenFire). Coming fifteen years after The Water of Life (recently revised, re-titled, reissued), this is original work in the truest sense—new and harkening to origins at the same time. Stories and myths: language, imagination, presence, attention. Kernels of awakening are in this remarkable book. "Michael Meade is a master-storyteller and story-teacher of the soul's unfolding. He addresses the mess we're in and helps us each discover the unique threads, the poetic DNA we must live out.

Garrison Keillor på tur i Liberty: A Lake Wobegon Novel.

In addition to hosting A Prairie Home Companion on an almost-weekly basis for thirty years and more now, and writing seventeen ... (mere)books, Garrison Keillor is also among the foremost author bookstore owners we have amongst us—joining Louise Erdrich and Larry McMurtry, to name a few others. Owning a bookstore (St. Paul's Common Good Books) is not the reason for this evening's visit; Garrison Keillor's new Lake Wobegon novel, Liberty (Viking) is the reason to be on hand for another entertaining evening, which may even have a moment of ribald humor and/or hinted-at political jesting in store for those attending. This tale has something to do with the Fourth of July parade, Lake Wobegon's famous 'Living Flag,' Clint Bunsen, and Miss Liberty. Last year's evening for Pontoon is a wonder; this evening should be no less.
