The Plug-In Drug: Television, Computers, and Family… af Marie Winn

This book sat on the shelf for a while, because I assumed I already believed everything it had to say. I was wrong.

The best parts are the stories of families who have removed the TV from their house, either temporarily or permanently:

The first weekend was brutal. In the absence of television, it is very difficult to keep three children occupied from sunup to sundown. We were desperate for relief. A note I made on the first Saturday captures the ambiance of the household: "I'm so exhausted I could vomit...Toys are being scattered faster than I can pick them up."

Our children are playing together, real old-fashioned playing. The two middle children made up an entire musical entitled Dolphins in the Desert.

When the kids had nothing to do, they went out and made a secret hideout -- played there for many days.

Personally I find I can tolerate Saturday housework as a working mother a lot better when I don't see my husband loafing near the TV.

The kids really sat there for quite a while, just as if they were watching. It was pathetic. But it made us absolutely certain we'd done the right thing by chucking the set out.

Red-Tails in Love af Marie Winn

In 1991, a rather light-colored red-tailed hawk was spotted by some regular bird-watchers in NYC's Central Park. Observers were excited to see the hawk engage in courtship display and win a mate. Their first nesting attempt was foiled by mobbing crows, but the next year the pair built a new nest on the side of a building, an unusual site for red-tailed hawks to choose. They laid eggs which failed to hatch, but later on had success- and eager bird-watchers counted the chicks, watched the parents going to and fro to feed them, witnessed the young hawks' first flight. Meanwhile they also did all they could to protect the birds without disturbing them- stepping in when the city poisoned rats and pigeons, or when maintenance workers attempted to remove the nest. The notably pale hawk is a mainstay through the story, but had several different mates in a row- and one that apparently returned to him later on- because some of them met with misfortune. The hawk and his various mates became pretty famous for thriving and raising so many young year after year in the heart of New York City. The book isn't all about hawks though- in fact I'd say it's more about birds of all kinds in Central Park and the people- from dedicated scientists and locals to visiting tourists who never took an interest before. There are downy woodpeckers, saw-whet owls, flickers, green herons, killdeer and one rare seagull escaped from a zoo mentioned in particular, and many many more species mentioned just as sightings. The account as a whole is really engaging and lovely to read, although I felt the title and jacket description a bit misleading since the hawks aren't the entire focus of it.

Unplugging the Plug-in Drug af Marie Winn

207 pages indexed. Buy this book. I watch way tto much television, probably yoo do do also. This book gives a reasonable arguement for trying to go a week without watching television. Sorry it also means not recording shows for later viewing. Marie Winn primary argument is that TV robbs the individual of time best spent doing other activities, such as talking with your spouse , kids, and maybe God. Her second arguement is that kids in particular become less creaative the more hours spent watching. Television becomes a subsitute for relationships. Television becomes the relation. Like any other drug withdrawing from TV comes at a price. Marie Winn has creative ways of easing withdrawl symptoms. Now if only I would follow her advise..… (mere)
