Kort biografi
Jacqueline Susann (born 8-20-1918) was the daughter of Philadelphia PA artist Robert Susan. Jacqueline went to New York City after high school to pursue an acting career. Known on Broadway more for her love affairs versus her acting talents, Jacqueline married press agent Irving Mansfield in the late 1930s. The couple had a single child, Guy born in the mid 1940s. After writing her first book "Every Night Josephine", Jacqueline was diagnosed with breast cancer in the early 1960s. Spurned to leave a legacy, Jacqueline wrote the classic "Valley of the Dolls", "The Love Machine" and "Once is Not Enough", all of which where NY Times bestsellers. Before her death, Jacqueline was the first person to have 3 back to back #1 best sellers on the NY Times best seller list.

A gossipy favorite. I needed to read something historical from various POV's, and this didn't disappoint. Drama on high, lol

fabulously depressing, valley of the dolls is the perfect showbusiness corruption story. it highlights the decadence and alienation of the entertainment industry, whilst also commenting on the social restrictions placed on women in this era - all in a very camp manner (probably not intended, but a highlight nonetheless). i loved jennifer and anne (and had a love-hate relationship with neely), and found their stories fascinating. an intimately camp portrait of a descent into, well, the valley of the dolls.… (mere)

I read this in high school... goodness knows why. I didn't particularly enjoy it, though it does keep moving along and kind of holds you in town hoping that eventually things will go right for the characters or that they will have some insight into their lives and take a little responsibility or face up and change eventually... but it never happens. This has got to be one of the most depressing books I've ever read. Unfortunately I can't even really say it presents women in a bad light or unfairly, because I still know women like this. I think this novel is a kind of anti-feminist classic; a kind of cautionary tale that maybe all teen girls should read so they don't ever grow up to be mindless bimbos who - despite their brains and talent and success and friendships with other women - STILL define themselves and their happiness entirely through the eyes and desires of men.… (mere)

Every Night Josephine is the memoirs of socialite Jacueline Susann (Valley of the Dolls) as she recalls her life with her beloved pet poodle Josephine and the ups and downs of having a poodle as your only child while living in a lavish apartment in Manhattan during the late 60's.

I read this book in '98 when I came across it on a relatives bookcase. Having read every other book she owned, I wasn't expecting much. However, I was pleasantly surprised with the humor, and lightheartedness of this standalone.

If you have the opportunity to read it, I suggest you do -- when you need to read light and fluffy either when you can't decide on something else, or if you want to banish the feelings leftover from a dark or emotionally trying book.

Every Night Josephine is the literary equivalent of peach sorbet as a palate cleanser. It is available in paperback on Amazon, however you might be able to locate an e-book version if you hunt around.
