Fred Landon (1880–1969)

Solid book sympathetic to both sides about American relations with western Ontario from about 1790 to 1890, though chiefly to confederation (1867). It stresses the point that a very large proportion of the early settlers of western Ontario were Americans, mostly not Loyalists after the first few years, but just pioneers who wanted cheap land and did not care deeply about the government they were under. It also makes the point that the United States war hawks were not the only ones with territorial ambitions in the War of 1812 --Canadian fur traders seriously hoped to regain the Northwest Territory ceded in 1783.Also emphasizes religious cnflicts between the official Anglican Church and Protestant churches with American links, notably Methodists and Baptists, and the Scottish Presbyterians.… (mere)
