Kort biografi
Maureen Johnson (born February 16, 1973) is an American author of young adult fiction. Her published novels include 13 Little Blue Envelopes, The Name of the Star, Truly Devious, and Suite Scarlett. Among Johnson's works are collaborative efforts such as Let It Snow, a holiday romance novel of interwoven stories co-written with John Green and Lauren Myracle, and a series of novellas found in anthologies The Bane Chronicles, Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy, and Ghosts of the Shadow Market.

Johnson was born in Philadelphia and attended an all-girl Catholic preparatory high school. She graduated from the University of Delaware in 1995 with a degree in English. Johnson later worked variously as literary manager of a Philadelphia theater company, a waitress in a theme restaurant, a secretary, a bartender in Piccadilly, and an occasional performer in New York City. She studied both writing and theatrical dramaturgy at Columbia University, where she received her MFA in Writing.

Johnson's debut novel The Key to the Golden Firebird was published in May 2004 by HarperTeen. Centered around themes of grief and resilience and set in the suburbs of Philadelphia a year after his passing, the novel depicts three sisters of different age as they individually process and come to understand their father's death, and their paths ahead. The Key to the Golden Firebird entered the market during a resurgence of popular interest in the young adult fiction genre. In 2005, it received starred reviews from both School Library Journal and Booklist.

Skimmed most of it. Didn't really draw me in, but---while I read a lot of LGBT YA novels---I'm not exactly the target audience. So whatever.

I really hated this book, but after reading the reviews and finding out it's the second in a series, it makes more sense. I'm going to go read the first one, and then I might change my review.

Not gonna say this was perfect but I sure read it fast (in bed in one sitting late into the night). Was wrong about the killer at the end of the last book, but IMO it didn't quite play fair---I'm still pretty sure it could have been the person I expected up until Stevie revealed it wasn't. Not a great fan of "the accused offed themself, justice is done" as a conclusion.

I'm also wondering about some of the other details --- how did Stevie know about the existence of the trunk at all? It's not obvious from the premises. Was it explained somewhere else why the person who opened the trunk was the only person to do so? Knocking 315 doors in a day is like... 12 hours of work. Some typos in the ebook. But hey, it still carries you along.… (mere)

Liked this better than #1; the pacing was more even. Still not very interested in love-interest!boy, but at least he does more interesting things in this one. It made me think about what we consider "acting crazy" to look like, and why that doesn't ever seem look like real mental illness. I'm sure Johnson is going to go there, because realistic portrayal of anxiety is a running theme.

J. should be my favorite character but she's given more Quirky And/Or Narratively Useful Traits than feelings or conflicts. Nate and other!love-interest!boy get a lot more.

The mystery does play fair in this, more than in the previous I think. I had gotten as far as guessing Ellie was still on the grounds somewhere, but I figured she was being hidden by someone, not dead. It only took me a bit at the end to realize Larry is responsible for Ellie's death (cover up for Hayes) and also set the fire (more cover up, this time related to receiving Alice's trust); I'm not yet sure why he targeted Hayes in the first place.
